Post Treatment Care Instructions

What To Do After Endodontic Treatment

After your treatment, Dr. Grossman or Dr. Geisler will give you instructions for proper pain management and dental care during the recovery process. It is critical to follow these guidelines, particularly since you have a temporary filling. Wait until the numbing medication wears off before eating, and avoid using the treated tooth for chewing until it has been fully restored. Continue to brush and floss daily as usual.

Managing Post-Operative Symptoms

As the numbing medication from the procedure wears off in most cases there will be little to no discomfort. Rarely, however, there can be some tenderness ranging from minor to severe discomfort that can last anywhere from 2 – 14 days. This is a variation (although rare) of normal healing. If you are taking an antibiotic you must finish the prescription.

You may not need any pain medication after the procedure, and most patients do well without it. However, if you have discomfort, you may take the following medications together as soon as possible after the procedure:

  • 2 Advil (Ibuprofen 200 mg each)
  • 1 regular-strength Tylenol (Acetaminophen 325 mg)
Do not use Extra Strength Tylenol.

You may repeat this combination every 6 hours if needed for pain, up to a maximum of 4 times in 24 hours.
